Construction students put learning into practice

Students from East Sussex College Group recently visited a housing development as part of a Local Labour Agreement signed during the planning application process with Eastbourne Borough Council.

The students, who are studying Construction in the Built Environment, were given an overview of the compliance paperwork and drawings followed by a tour of the Beech Homes site in Mill Gap Road, highlighting some of the engineering challenges.

Chris Sumners, site manager for Beech Homes, said: “We were delighted to welcome the construction students from East Sussex College Group to our site. They showed great enthusiasm and were also present for a visit by the building control inspector which was an added bonus. It is great to see the next generation of skilled construction workers coming through.”

Max Challice, Year 1 student, said: “It was interesting and useful to learn about complex renovations in such a historical building.”

The students and tutor said they found the visit beneficial to their studies and are keen to track progress with the build over the coming months.

Eastbourne Borough Council applies Local Labour Agreements on qualifying developments to encourage contractors to employ local people, offer apprenticeships, work experience placements, support local businesses and participate in curriculum activities.
