Conservation Area extended in Old Bedhampton

Councillors from Havant Borough Council have agreed to extend the Old Bedhampton Conservation Area to ensure the rich history and heritage is preserved.

The formally adopted area has now been extended to include Bidbury Mead, sections of Bedhampton Road and the Manor Farm buildings on Lower Road.

The last review of the Conservation Area took place in 1994. The appraisal agreed yesterday includes a detailed management plan to preserve and enhance the historic and architectural character that makes Old Bedhampton special. It also provides detail of the revised boundaries. The review itself was subject to public consultation earlier this year and this led to a number of changes to the appraisal.

Conservation areas are groups of buildings or areas designated for their special architectural and historic significance. They ensure that emphasis is given to their special character and history. It ensures that their preservation and/or enhancement can be taken into account when making decisions on planning applications or other development proposals that could impact on an area.

Councillor Tim Pike, Deputy Leader and Cabinet lead for Planning, Regeneration and Communities said: “This council takes heritage and conservation very seriously. Conservation areas are not created to stop future development, but to ensure that changes to existing buildings and new buildings fit within the character of the area. It is particularly important that we preserve and enhance this for future generations.”

The borough of Havant currently has 14 conservation areas, 241 buildings of special architectural or historic interest (listed buildings) and some 83 buildings that have been identified as being of local interest.
