CommunityAd chats with local author, Emma Rosen

Local resident Emma Rosen released her first book in October 2018 titled ‘Milk: a story of breastfeeding in a society that’s forgotten how’ and now a year later she has released her first children’s book, ‘Lily the Limpet Gets Lost’.

CommunityAd had the lovely opportunity to catch up with Emma to find out more about her life and what her books entail.

So Emma, firstly tell our readers a little about your books?

I have just released Lily the Limpet Gets Lost, a children’s picture book about life in a rock pool with a gentle environmental message. My first book, Milk, came out in 2018. It follows my experiences breastfeeding my three children interwoven with informational chapters about everything from the biology of mammals to the history of infant feeding!

What inspired you to put pen to paper?

When I struggled to breastfeed my eldest child, I found writing about it cathartic. I also wanted to tell a story of breastfeeding that included all the ups and downs and everything in between. There was nothing like that out there and it certainly would have helped me to feel less isolated. If Milk had never been published, I still thought it would make a wonderful record for my children, which helped me to stay motivated to complete it. Once I’d finished, I felt the need to get the book out there and I could see a future in continuing to write.

Have you always had aspirations to be a writer?

Yes! I never wanted to be anything else; I just wasn’t sure how you could become a writer or what I would write about.

Do you remember the first thing you ever wrote? What was it?

I used to have a little book I’d made called ‘Jenny and the Giant’ where I had drawn all the pictures and stapled it together. I’m not sure where that’s got to now though. I was forever writing stories and poems when I was little; I had notebooks full of all sorts of ramblings.

What is it about Deal that you believe inspires creativity?

For me, it’s the coast. I need to live near the sea in general, let alone to inspire creativity. I’m not from Kent originally – I grew up in Flitwick, Bedfordshire which is firmly landlocked, although we had lots of seaside holidays (including to Margate). I then studied marine biology in Plymouth and have refused to move far away from the sea since. I love the views of the cliffs here, as well as walking on Deal Pier and exploring local rock pools – it’s just such a beautiful part of the world.

Why should our readers become your readers?

I’m passionate about writing books with a positive message, whether that’s about being thoughtful about sea creatures or supportive of breastfeeding. I also like to support other writers (particularly indies) where I can, so I review books and share my writing experiences on my social media pages too.
