Commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day

The 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau is being commemorated with an exhibition organised by Ashford Borough Council.

From Monday 13 January to Monday 3 February, visitors will be able to find out more about Holocaust Memorial Day, 27 January, and the work that the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust does.

Held in the Visitor Information Services area at the Gateway in Ashford town centre, the exhibition will focus on this year’s theme for Holocaust Memorial Day – Stand Together. 2020 is the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz and the 25th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.

The theme explores how genocidal regimes throughout history have deliberately divided societies by marginalising certain groups and how by standing together with our neighbours and speaking out against oppression we can challenge these tactics.

Cllr Peter Feacey, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Tourism and Leisure, said: “It is important that we commemorate such a significant date and remember the lessons that history has taught us. As time passes there are fewer survivors of the horrors of the holocaust alive to tell their stories so there is a greater responsibility on us to make sure this part of history is not forgotten.”

The Gateway is open from 9am to 5pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 9am to 6pm on Thursday, 9am to 3pm on Saturday and closed on Sunday.
