Myth buster: All that glitters is not gold – anything covered in glitter can’t be recycled

This includes cards, wrapping paper, crackers, paper bags and cardboard boxes. Unfortunately, these will need to go in your grey wheeled bin.

Where possible please try to buy these items without glitter so they can be recycled.

  • Myth buster: We cannot accept bubble wrap in your clear recycling sacks

Unfortunately at the moment our Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) contractor does not accept this material at their sorting house.

Instead of putting your bubble wrap in your grey wheeled bin, try to reuse it where you can. (Take all the stress out of Christmas and pop those bubbles!)

  • Myth buster: Ribbon can’t be recycled

Before recycling, remove any sticky tape and decorations such as ribbons and bows as these cannot be recycled. If you are unable to reuse them, then please place in your grey wheeled bin.

  • Myth buster: Foil wrapping paper can’t be recycled

Wrapping paper can only be recycled if it passes the scrunch test – simple paper wrap can be recycled but foil or glitter-decorated paper cannot and needs to go in your grey wheeled bin.

REDUCE TIP – It’s a cracker!

Did you know some Christmas crackers contain single-use plastic?

Millions of crackers are pulled on Christmas Day and binned straight away!

Try to avoid Christmas crackers that contain plastic toys and use plastic glitter for decoration and look for plastic free crackers instead. There’s lots of options out there including how to make your own!
