A chat with the welcoming East Peckham Community Choir

Community Choir

Everyone knows that singing is good for the soul, whether you’re a verified show-stopper or a secret shower-time singer, it can boost your confidence and also lift your spirits on those days when you’re feeling rather low.

CommunityAd were lucky enough to catch up with Debbie Johnson, a voice from the talented and friendly group that is East Peckham Community Choir, and discussed the choir and the beauty of living in a place like East Peckham.

Debbie has been singing in the choir for just over two years, but some of the more experienced members have been part of the choir for decades, showing how easy it is to fall in love with the town and the people alike.

What’s your favourite aspect of being involved with the society and what’s your role within that?

I love singing in a group and the joy that brings. I sing in the alto section most of the time, although I can sing soprano sometimes if my voice isn’t too tired! I am the secretary for the group which means I manage our Facebook page and also send emails between members.

It seems from the outside looking in that you are a merry bunch, would you say the members enjoy their time at the East Peckham Community Choir?

We all enjoy being part of the group. We are a diverse bunch but we unite in our love of singing. All the members are very welcoming and quickly make people feel like one of the family.

It is proven that singing is good for you, and could be argued it’s the perfect antidote to these miserable winter days ahead, what makes being part of a group such as this so uplifting?

We have a lot of giggles! I would feel sorry for our conductor, Katerina, trying to keep us all in order but she is as bad as the rest of us. A lot of us have busy, stressful lives and can feel tired towards the end of the week but we always leave rehearsals smiling and more relaxed.

What would you say to our readers who are considering joining a musical theatre society, why should they take the leap and join a society like yours? And how and when can they?

We are a very friendly group and welcome all singers – there are no auditions. We meet on a Thursday at 8pm in Curran Hall, East Peckham. Just turn up or message us before hand!

What makes the community of East Peckham such a splendid one to be a part of?

East Peckham is a lovely village in the heart of the countryside but also near two big towns. Everyone I have met here has been friendly and welcoming. The choir includes all sectors of our community.
