Bin collection changes for bank holiday week

Panto exhibition opening soon in Canterbury

Bin collections in the Canterbury district will take place one day later than usual during the August bank holiday week.

The collection due on bank holiday Monday (28 August) will take place on the Tuesday, and so on through the week, with Friday’s collection happening on the Saturday (2 September).

The change is being introduced to try and overcome the difficulty with collections in Whitstable on a bank holiday Monday. The increase in traffic and parked vehicles combined with the narrowness of some streets means Serco can struggle to complete the collection.

The need to catch up on missed roads then has a knock-on effect across the district for the rest of the week.

Chairman of the council’s Community Committee, Cllr Neil Baker, said: “August bank holiday collections in Whitstable are a real challenge for us. Problems have increased over the years to the extent that we decided we needed to look at a different approach this year.

“We’ll be monitoring how it goes very closely to see whether this improves the service across the whole week compared to previous years.”

Collections will return to normal from week commencing 4 September.

Clinical waste collections are unaffected by the change and will take place as usual.
