Big Schools’ Birdwatch

Big Schools’ Birdwatch is simply a bird survey which pupils from throughout the UK can take part in.  It is as easy as counting the number of birds on the school grounds.

This year, the Big Schools’ Birdwatch is running from 6th January – 21st February; in between these two dates, schools throughout the country will be able to submit the results of the surveys carried out by children of any age or ability.  The survey takes just one hour.

Educators are able to pick up a pack from the RSPB website until the 2nd February.  After the 21st February, the RSPB will share the results of the surveys so each individual class can see how their research is contributing.

Kate Sefton, a lower school teacher, says of the Birdwatch, “There’s definitely something in it for every age group.  It links directly to the national curriculum learning objectives and also down to development matters for early years.”

You can apply for the packs and find an exceedingly useful amount of information and resources regarding the Birdwatch by follow the link, here.  This includes everything you need to know about the birds you’re likely to see and facts about the ones that need help.
