Beat the January blues with BFI Musicals! at Chelmsford City Theatres

Chelmsford City Theatres is spreading a little happiness in the most depressing month of the year with a series of events celebrating the world’s finest musicals. The theatre’s Picture House is taking part in the BFI Musicals! season throughout January 2020, presenting a mini season of musicals with live performances from acclaimed drag artist Ruby Violet and an evening of musical classics with singer Robert Habermann.

‘Musicals with Ruby Violet’, which runs throughout the month, will feature ‘Cabaret’, ‘Guys and Dolls’ and ‘Calamity Jane’, with a special set of classic hits from Ruby before each showing. Audiences will also be able to join Doris Day for a singalong screening of her 1953 hit ‘Calamity Jane’.

Award-winning singer Robert Habermann tells the story of the origins of the Hollywood musical tradition from 1927 and ‘The Jazz Singer’ to the present day, with everything from ‘Singin’ in the Rain’, ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and ‘Mary Poppins’ in between.

The theatres’ artistic director Ian Knowles hopes these performances will add some sparkle to the start of the year: “Musicals are some of the best loved films of all time – we hope these events in Chelmsford will help to get us over the post-holiday slump this January. We’re proud to be part of this initiative from the BFI which is bringing the buoyant, shared experience of watching a classic musical on the big screen across the country.”

‘BFI Musicals! The Greatest Show on Screen’ recognises the spectacle and craft of musicals on film with a nation-wide cinema season, led by BFI, the Independent Cinema Office and Film Audience Network, supported by funds from the National Lottery.

‘Musicals with Ruby Violet’ are at at 2pm and 7.30pm on 10, 17 and 25 January. ‘Strictly Movie Musicals with Robert Habermann’ takes place on 15 January at 7pm. Tickets can be booked by calling the box office on 01245 606505 or online at www.chelmsford.gov.uk/theatres/whats-on/musicals.
