All aboard for exhibition after councillors’ funding boost

Eastbourne Heritage Centre has opened its new exhibition celebrating the 170th anniversary of railways in the town, with funding help from Meads councillors.

Eastbourne – All change! takes visitors on a historic train journey covering steam and electrification, ticketing, timetable technology, the four station buildings, engine sheds, turntable, sidings, signalling, track maintenance and more.

Councillors Robert Smart, Barry Taylor and Jane Lamb agreed to a £600 funding request through the devolved budget to complete displays and interpretation boards for the exhibition.

In a joint statement, the councillors said: “We were pleased to assist with the final funding needed for this fascinating exhibition to go ahead. It will be of interest to people of all ages from students to pensioners, and attract residents and tourists alike.”

Nicholas Howell, from Eastbourne Heritage Centre, added: “Eastbourne’s railway system has undergone profound changes since its inception in the middle of the 19th century and our exhibition has a wealth of information detailing these developments.

“We are grateful to Meads councillors for granting our request and hope as many people as possible take the opportunity to hop aboard and enjoy our show.”

Meads councillors also awarded almost £600 from the devolved budget to pay for an outside cabinet to house a new defibrillator at Meads Lawn Tennis at Rompa Pavilion so that people can access it around-the-clock.

Also to benefit from Meads councillors was Little Chelsea Traders’ Association which was given £1,000 towards its Little Christmas event in December.
