Weight loss success

‘Go along and try it because if you don’t go and try things you’ll never get anywhere.’

Julie was recommended our Healthy Way classes by her gym instructor after being told she needed to lose some weight by her doctor.

Through exercise and eating more healthily, Julie has lost three stone.

Although she was going to the gym, Julie felt her diet was holding her back. She puts her success down to what she’s learnt by attending Healthy Way and she speaks with confidence about making healthy choices, portion sizing and food labelling. Julie said:

“It’s amazing how they can lead you astray by what they put on labelling. You need to check it and make sure what you’re eating and how many calories, how much fats, saturated fats, sugar and salt is in the food and drink you buy.”

When it comes to living a healthier lifestyle, it can be hard to know where to start and hard to stay motivated. Healthy Way gives you all the information you need to become healthier and offers support and advice in a group setting. Classes run for 11 weeks and meet weekly.

To find out more, visit our website. If you can’t make a class, we also run a friendly closed Facebook group – just search for HealthyWay in the groups tab. Join the group to get tips on living a healthier lifestyle and to speak to others about the programme.

Make the most of your bank holiday weekend

With not one but two bank holidays in May, it’s easy to drink a bit more than normal.

Here’s our five top tips for how you can celebrate the holidays and still feel refreshed come Tuesday morning.

  • Set a budget, and only take that amount of cash out with you. Resist contactless, or if you can, leave your card at home.
  • Start drinking later in the day.
  • Take your time and enjoy your drink. Avoid getting into rounds.
  • Sit one out and have a soft drink.
  • Stay hydrated. Make sure you have a few glasses of water throughout the night.

If you’re not sure how much you drink, why not take our quick quiz and find out your alcohol score?

Checking your health has never been easier

Stay healthy by identifying any problems early this May. If you’re aged between 40 and 74 then you’re eligible for a free NHS Health Check.

High cholesterol and blood pressure might not have any obvious symptoms, but they contribute to cardiovascular disease, the cause of one in four deaths in England. So even if you feel fine, it’s worth getting a free NHS Health Check.

Our advisors will be visiting Medway’s shopping centres and businesses ready to give you a check on the spot, no appointment needed.

Look out for us at:

  • The Pentagon, Chatham on Wednesday, 15 May, all day
  • Dockyard workplaces on Thursday, 16 May between 8:30am and 4:30pm
  • Hempstead Valley shopping centre on Friday, 17 May, all day

If you’d prefer to book an appointment text ‘CHECK’ to 81066 or call 01634 33 48 14. You can email us at [email protected]

Walks and bike rides for history lovers

This April we added a brand new bike ride to our regular group rides, starting from The Historic Dockyard Chatham every Monday.

Meet people with similar interests and enjoy a cycle ride around the old Dockyard site and buildings. The set route includes St Mary’s Island and part of the Discovery trail, which takes in fascinating sites from Chatham’s unique and exciting naval history.

If you don’t have a bike, you don’t have to miss out; we also run walks from the Dockyard every Thursday. Both bike rides and walks are free.

Our walks and cycle rides run throughout the week and use country, urban and historic routes, including Rochester and its stunning cathedral. To find out what’s on offer visit our A Better Medway website
