75th Anniversary of VE Day on 8 May – Communities Invited to Get Involved

With the 75th anniversary of VE Day on 8 May, communities are invited to get involved with a VE Day 75 party – and Dover District Council is reminding people we need to receive applications for street parties requiring road closures by 6 March.

Friday 8 May 2020 has been designated by the Government as a Bank Holiday, and communities are being encouraged to get involved over the weekend from 8–10 May.  This is the perfect time to organise something to commemorate VE Day 75, marking the end of the Second World War in Europe 75 years ago.

Dover District Council is working to help communities and promote local events. To make an application for a street party/road closure in Dover District, please complete the short online form at www.dover.gov.uk/VE_day

A whole range of commemorative events for this historic anniversary is being coordinated nationally and internationally by Bruno Peek, Pageantmaster, VE Day 75.  This includes the ‘Nation’s Toast to the Heroes of WWII’, in which Dover will be playing a major part.

Cllr Mike Conolly, Chairman of Dover District Council: “This is an important anniversary, and we hope as many people as possible get involved. This is a great opportunity for people to come together in our communities in peace and friendship to mark this historic occasion.”

For more information on VE Day locally, please see DDC’s VE Day 75 Events page – or for more information on VE Day 75 and to register your event on the national website, please see the VE Day 75 website.
