£30 million allocated to improve Braintree’s Town Centre

Braintree District Council announces its investment of £30 million into the Manor Street regeneration scheme.

“Without our investment as a local authority, these improvements to health facilities, the bus station and town centre would just not happen.”

This financial backing into the development of new homes, services and businesses could create over 100 jobs and is estimated to bring at least 24,000 more visitors into the town centre annually, benefiting businesses by adding over £3.5 million into the local economy every year.

Along with the economic gains, this regeneration is set to bring social and environmental benefits too.

The scheme will see the delivery of a modern “Livewell” hub which will provide 20,000 residents with access to a range of health services that could include general practice, outpatient services and therapies.

A modern and bigger bus station with added capacity will improve public transport and support future growth in services and the revamp will transform the look and feel of that area making it a nicer place to wait for travel connections.

The new hotel will bring in more visitors increasing custom for businesses, while the apartment homes could be offered up on a scheme which helps first time buyers access the housing market.

Kier Regional Building Eastern has now been officially appointed to lead on delivering this £30 million investment including the build of 35 new homes, a “Livewell” hub, pharmacy, 70 bed Travelodge, new bus interchange, café or restaurant overlooking a new public realm and a twin-level car park.

Contracts were signed on Friday, 25th October 2019.

The next step will see Kier preparing the site for major construction. The work is due to start in February 2020 and will take about 2 years to complete.
