Year 5 pupils in 10 primary schools in Thanet will be taking part in an anti-litter poster competition during September and October in an effort to tackle litter.

The constituency-wide competition is being run by Kent based anti-litter charity, Litter Angels, with the help of local MP’s, Sir Roger Gale and Craig Mackinlay.

Litter Angels was set up to educate children about the negative impact that litter has on our local environment. The charity is backed by McDonald’s and Keep Britain Tidy.

Schools that have agreed to take part will receive a lesson pack with instructions on how to enter. The theme of this year’s competition is the posters must include a litter angel like Eric, the charity’s mascot.

Once all the entries have been received they will then be narrowed down to one winner from each school which will be announced at a special presentation evening towards the end of the year. Each winner will receive a goodie bag containing a certificate, a personalised mug and a copy of the Litter Angels storybook.

One overall winning poster will be displayed in McDonald’s car parks across Thanet and both the school and winning pupil will each win a cash prize.

Last year’s winner was Margot, a pupil of Wellesley House Primary School.

Gordon Henderson MP, Chairman of Litter Angels, said:

“Litter is a major issue and so one way of tackling that is to teach future generations the impact litter has on our environment, using a fun and artistic approach, in the hope they will not drop litter and take pride in where they live and play.”

Craig Mackinlay MP, added:

“Litter blights our towns and roadsides, and spoils our enjoyment of both the seaside and countryside.

“It is also incredibly expensive, costing local councils hundreds of millions of pounds a year to clear up.

“That’s why both Sir Roger and I are pleased that 10 schools in Thanet are taking part in the Litter Angels competition to help promote keeping our Isle tidy.”
