Tonetic Records – Thanet’s new youth-led record label

Based in Cliftonville, Tonetic Records is a newly formed record label providing a platform for the talented young voices of Thanet and Kent.

The record label consists of a talented group of young people who have either grown up or studied in Kent and they have already received funding from Youth Music to help with the relaunching of Art Education Exchange’s record label.

We caught up with Spencer Enock from the local band Pynch, who is also the label head for the project and part of the team at Tonetic Records to find out a little bit more.

Brimming with ambition and excitement, Spencer talks to us about the label explaining: “The team is made up entirely of young people (under 25) and supporting their development and realising their creative vision is at the heart of everything we aim to do.

“We’ve got Tom and Joe, who both studied at Canterbury Christ Church, handling the production of the label’s discography. We’ve got Lulu working as our A&R, who’s done an amazing job of scouting out artists for us to work with. We have Esthe doing a great job of managing our social media channels and Max handling all graphic design duties.”

How did Tonetic Records come about and where did the name originate?

“Well, Arts Education Exchange had already been doing some great work over the past few years under its Arts Education Exchange Recordings imprint but Ollie (Founder and Managing Director) wanted the label to be run by young people as well so relaunching as Tonetic Records is the start of that.

“Tom suggested Tonetic Records which is actually the earliest recorded name for the Isle of Thanet back in 150 AD. It’s also a sort of combination of the words tone and kinetic so we thought it was a perfect fit as we want the label to become a dynamic music institution for Thanet and Kent.”

Can you talk to us about the two singles that have been released on your record label so far?

“The first single we worked on was WAIT FOR YOU by Bruu. which is a really soulful love song with a really cool and contemporary bedroom pop production aesthetic. Bruu. had already released quite a bit of music but we were really excited about helping him get his first radio plays on BBC Introduction.

“The second single we worked on was I Lie in The Sun by Eliza Lovise who is a really talented young songwriter from Thanet. I was amazed at the quality of her song writing and the emotional impact of her lyrics. The song is so beautiful and reminds me of Joni Mitchell.

“In early 2022, we’re going to be releasing four more singles before then releasing all six of them on a compilation vinyl record which is really exciting! After that, the plan is to continue working with young people and releasing their music consistently. We want people to know that we’re here to help support their development and get their music out into the world.”
