Beginners2runners Hythe & Folkestone

Since lockdown began back in March 2020, a number of people have taken up walking and running to not only help break the monotony of being stuck indoors, but also to improve their own fitness.

One such group which was formed out of lockdown is Beginners2runners Hythe & Folkestone, a welcoming and inclusive running group for those local to the area.

We caught up with Kelly Gammon, who manages the group just shy of 50-60 members, to find out a little bit more about Beginners2runners and how our readers might be able to get involved.

Kelly told us: “I started running as a complete non-runner back in 2016 at our Ashford branch. I loved how everyone was so welcoming and encouraging of each other no matter what their age, fitness level or ability. I am supported by a wonderful group of team leaders who help make sure everyone is safe whilst having fun at club.

“We felt Hythe had a good community feel to it and wanted to help members of the local area get active whilst making friends and having fun. Although we have only been in Hythe for a short time we have had clubs in other areas since 2013, helping people get started with running in a safe and encouraging environment. Beginners2runners was formed by Steve Grantham after he decided to get fit and wanted to help others to enjoy the benefits of running.

“I think lockdown has really made people appreciate the freedom being outdoors can give you, whether that’s through running or through walking.

“Running in a group really helps with motivation, having the rest of the green family, that’s how we are known, supporting and encouraging you no matter how far or fast you go really does help carry you along. As a club we are not competitive and will support everyone no matter their abilities.”

What advice would you give for people who are a bit hesitant about joining your group or just going for their first run?

“Just come along and give it a try. I too started as a beginner so I know how daunting it can feel, so as soon as you arrive you will be greeted with a smile and made to feel welcome. When I was thinking of joining, I was worried that I would turn up to see lots of professional looking runners but what I found was people just like myself, people that wanted to keep healthy whilst having fun.

“The first few weeks of each beginners course starts off in the grounds on the Hythe cricket and squash club so that we can help our beginners gain confidence before heading out on to the streets.

“Hythe is such a wonderful community from what we have seen so far, everyone we have come across has been friendly and given us a wave or some encouragement. We love the wide variety of running Hythe has to offer, one session we can be running along the beautiful seafront and the next hitting the trails up to Saltwood Castle.”
