The MoT test was introduced in 1960 under the direction of the Minister of Transport, Ernest Marples under powers in the Road Traffic Act 1956, to improve road safety and has been regularly updated since.

An MoT lasts for a year. For ease the date it runs out is printed on the last pass certificate. You can get an MoT up to a month (minus a day) before it runs out and keep the same renewal date.
