From Ditchling to Korea with the World Scout Jamboree

As some of you parents might be aware, the 25th World Scout Jamboree is taking place in South Korea in 2023 and we are almost as excited as the Scouts attending.

One of the few people the area selected was local Scout Ernie Wakeford who, as part of his preparation for the World Scout Jamboree, needs to raise £4,000, not only allowing him to attend but also some of that money raised will go towards helping Scouts from less fortunate countries take part in the event.

Speaking to us at CommunityAd, Ernie talks about some of the ways he’s gone about fundraising so far: “To raise these funds, I have run stalls at lots of village events including the village Sports Day, Ditchling Fair and the London to Brighton Bike Ride. I have completed a sponsored run, also raising money for the International Rescue Committee. From these events, along with many others, I have managed to raise about £1,800. I still have a long way to go so expect to see me fundraising around the village in the future!

“I’ve also been preparing by trying to learn some Korean and cooking some traditional dishes. These include bibimbap and kalguksu which are both delicious!

“At the Jamboree, I will participate in lots of activities such as water sports, climbing and other adventurous activities. As well as this, I will be able to meet and make friends with Scouts from all over the world by sharing meals and trading scarves and badges. This will let me experience a huge variety of cultures and people throughout my stay in Korea. I will also be able to explore Korean culture by staying for a few days in Seoul and other places around the country.

“I also hope that the Jamboree will extend beyond the event itself, so I can let my development and experiences filter back into the Scouting movement in the local area and into the wider community.”
