What is Shotokan Karate?

Shotokan Karate is a traditional style of martial art that originated in Okinawa, Japan around 1870. It is known for its emphasis on strong stances, powerful strikes, and practical self-defence techniques.

One of the distinctive features of Shotokan Karate is its utilisation of deep, rooted stances to generate power and stability. These stances are often combined with dynamic movements and explosive techniques, making Shotokan Karate effective for both self-defence and physical conditioning.

Shotokan Karate is taught with a strong emphasis on discipline, respect, and humility. Practitioners are encouraged to cultivate not only their physical abilities but also their mental and spiritual wellbeing. This holistic approach to training fosters personal growth and self-improvement, both on and off the training floor.

Sochin Karate Club was founded in 1981 as the Canterbury Christ Church University Karate Club. After the COVID pandemic this members club reinvented itself as Sochin Karate Club Canterbury. The word ‘Sochin’ translates as ‘tranquil force’ in Japanese, reflecting the style’s focus on stability and balance.
