When we picture fundraising, it usually conjures images of boot fairs and fun-runs, however four friends from Kings Hill and Wateringbury have challenged this rhetoric with a Golf Marathon in support of the Kent Association for the Blind (KAB).
We caught up with one of the golfers, Luke Shields, who took part alongside other Kings Hill Golf Club members, John Carr, Dan Mason and Gareth Cross, to find out what inspired the groups of friends and exactly what the Longest Day Golf Marathon consisted of.
Luke told us: “We’re all members of Kings Hill Golf Club that hold regular fundraising events for the Captain’s charity which is KAB, but because of the events over the last year the opportunity for the regular fundraising hasn’t taken place. This felt like a good way to help out.”
How did you come up with the unique fundraising idea of a golf marathon?
“We have seen the idea before as MacMillan Cancer regularly urge people to take on the challenge on summer solstice. We pinched the idea and wanted to do it for the Captain’s charity.
“The donations were amazing. Thank you to all that donated it really will make all the difference to those in need of the support from the KAB.”
Do you have any plans for future fundraisers?
“We are discussing 4 rounds in 4 different countries for next year, however we are in the very early stages and of course a lot will depend on travel restrictions and advice.
“We all really enjoyed undertaking this challenge. It wasn’t as easy as some might think. We got totally soaked for most of the day but at no point did it get any of us down. At the end of it we all said we would do it again.”
The incredible fundraiser raised an impressive £1,924 for the Kent Association for the Blind, so thank you to each of these four lads who took it upon themselves to raise money for a more-than-worthy cause during one of the most uncertain times we’ve experienced as a nation.
