James Ratchford – Lewes by Lens

James Ratchford knows a pretty place when he sees one, having grown up in Norfolk, travelled and worked overseas. He’s also lived in arguably the most beautiful place of all: Scotland.

James Ratchford now calls Lewes home and has done for the last seven years, it’s a place he considers ‘enchanting’ and he’s helping others see the beauty in Lewes through his photography workshops. CommunityAd had the pleasure of a quick chat with the friendly chap.

What makes Lewes a pleasant community to be a part of?

Lots of artists and like-minded people live in the community. They are passionate about what they create and often enjoy music, culture and have a strong appreciation for nature and our surroundings. I also love how family-friendly it is and how I can comfortably let my kids run bare-foot through the playgrounds and parks.

What do you find aesthetically so charming about Lewes and its surrounding areas? There’s something about it that stirs and inspires creativity, don’t you think?

For me, it’s the South Downs, the light that hits the enchanting rolling hills with glimpses of shimmering sea in the distance. I also love the cobbled lanes and wonky houses that fill Lewes’ streets.

What piece of advice would you give to budding photographers who have only recently picked up a camera?

Take pictures of things you enjoy. Go for a walk and take photographs of anything that catches your eye. Try taking the same shot from higher up or from another angle to make the image more interesting.

Why should they consider joining you on one of your workshops?

The workshops are the perfect introduction to photography and a great way to discover the capabilities of your camera. They take place in several stunning locations in Sussex and are run as informative walks. This makes communicating with individuals and photographing different subjects much easier. I’m delighted that those participating seem to get a lot of invaluable information from them. I’m also now teaming up with some unique accommodations in the area of Beachy Head and will be offering Photography Holidays over the coming months.
