In frame with Folkestone photographer Amy Kolsteren

Folkestone-based photographer, Amy Kolsteren, has been making a name for herself behind the lens and CommunityAd caught up with the 25-year-old to find out more about her career so far.

Recently featured in the monthly Digital Photographer magazine, Amy Kolsteren grew up in Ashford but now lives in Folkestone and loves to make use of the local beauty available on the Kent countryside. CommunityAd caught up with Amy to find out a little bit more about her career and where her passion began.

When did you realise you had a passion for photography and how did you discover it?

“I’ve been doing photography since I was 14 but started the business officially at 17, I then went full time with brand and business photography at the age of 22 in November 2018.

“When I was at school, I wasn’t a very well kid, so I had a lot of time off school with my laptop for company, I loved learning so would watch lots of videos about photography and read a lot of advice. I used to take self-portraits in my bedroom and take my camera everywhere I went. I realised I had a passion for it when it was the only hobby that had stuck around! Many passed through and lasted a week or so but my love for photography only grew and grew.

“My passion lies in making business and brand photos fun and unique. So, I’d say anything that’s a real challenge, for example, I’ve worked with finance firms and managed to get the CEO to relax and have a giggle. I really love helping people feel happy and confident.”

Where are some of your favourite places to shoot and what have been some of your inspirations?

“I enjoy shooting outdoors, especially on the Wye Downs, there’s nothing better than golden hour on the Downs! That beautiful sunlit glow is so flattering and provides a gorgeous backdrop. Folkestone is a beautiful community to be a part of and a space where creativity is celebrated. I’m so grateful that I ended up living here, I can’t imagine living away from the sea!

“Honestly, my dream would be to photograph Twiggy, she’s absolutely brilliant and just sparkles! Photography wise, Rankin is my biggest inspiration. He’s possibly the most well-known photographer and for good reason.”

What are some of the problems you face as a photographer in such a competitive field? Any advice for young photographers?

“This is a complicated question, as whilst competitive I’m a strong believer that there’s space for everybody if you niche yourself properly and truly hone in on your passions. When I started out, I tried to do everything and was definitely not as successful as I am now that I’ve found my true passion!

“Just do it. Stop thinking about it and do the thing! Even phone cameras are so powerful these days so there’s really no excuse to not get out and get practising! Remember, it’s important to have a good rapport with your clients as well.”
