Hampshire’s own singer/songwriter Kerry Goodhind

Music is just one of those things that life won’t quit, no matter what corner of the globe you explore, you will always discover music in one form or another.

Exploring the wide and diverse music scene is one of life’s joys, and this edition we had the opportunity to catch up with Hampshire based singer/songwriter Kerry Goodhind.

Currently located in and around the Fleet and Hartley Wintney areas, Kerry is originally from West London and completed her studies at Trinity College of Music at both Bond Street and on the Maritime at Greenwich with a full scholarship studying Classic Singing and Piano.

We sat down with Kerry Goodhind to find out some of her early inspirations, her advice for up-and-coming musicians and of course; her treasured Desert Island Discs.

Speaking to us at CommunityAd, Kerry tells: “My earliest memory is having my first piano lesson at 5 years old. My parents couldn’t afford a new piano so we had a very second-hand honky-tonk (just in case I gave up) that lived in the yellow garage at the end of the garden. Every night I would trundle down there come rain or shine. It only had about 10 keys that worked, but I loved that piano and my love for music was born!

“My “style” of writing and production today has elements of classical and theatrical combined with pop and alternative music all in one. There is truly something for everyone in there! When I cover songs, I usually pick something that I am able to de-construct and perform in a “unique” but still recognisable way, usually stripping it back to an acoustic piano and vocals version.

“As a musician first and foremost, I tend to write my chord patterns first, by playing with ideas on the piano, and once I have a catchy structure, I then compose my lyrics.”

Who are some of your greatest inspirations and if you could work with a band/artist dead or alive, who would it be?

“As a child I was pretty much brought up on an eclectic mix of music but I would say my favourite was Tamla Motown.

“I cannot narrow it down to one, these legends would have to be on my list:

Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley, Freddie Mercury, The Four Tops, Prince, Tina Turner, and Andrea Bocelli.”

What is the best advice you’ve been given and would pass on to any budding musicians?

“Always be “you”. Write like you, sing and play like you, dress like you. There will be plenty of people in this industry that will try and make you something that may not be your authentic style. The only way to have longevity and happiness in this business is to create in your own unique way and believe 100% in yourself and your work.”

What are your 3 Desert Island Discs?

“Tamla Motown Greatest Hits;

Prince’s Greatest Hits;

AC/DC Greatest Hits.”

Kerry will be playing “The Falcon” in Rotherwick on 2nd June with the band for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations, and she will also be playing alongside her sessions band at Lowde Fest this year on 9th July on the Keith Bennet Stage at 6:20pm.
