Frimley Cricket’s finest season

CommunityAd had the pleasure of a chat with Chairman Andy Lion before the club’s 200th season got underway with the promise of checking in once the final ball was bowled.

We’re sure glad we did as Frimley Cricket has marked its significant birthday with the most remarkable year in its long history, as we found out when we spoke to Andy whose smile was beaming with joy and pride.

So, Andy, how nice has it been to play out a full season of Cricket?

It’s been great to play a full season!

There were some restrictions at the beginning of the season which made it not the same still… but they didn’t stop us hosting the Marylebone CC in May to celebrate our 200-year anniversary. Which alongside the epic victory, was an amazing day all round. Once restrictions eased it was great to get things back to how they should be, cricket teas, warm showers after the game and social events etc. Plus having a pint inside after the game was a great welcome to most of us!

What a season it’s been! Can you tell our readers a bit about the triumphs?

Well… to put it simply… it’s been our best season ever!! Which in our 200th year makes it even more special! We got 3 teams promoted out of 4 in the I’Anson cricket league. Won two T20 cups, the Surrey Slam and the Pope Cup.

Created a ladies team for the very first time, our juniors had a strong year too.

U15, U13, U9s finishing runners up in their respective leagues, plus more juniors developing into senior cricket than before, resulting in a 4XI seniors’ team being created for this vision in mind.

47 young new cricketers (5- 8-year olds) joined our ECB all-stars program and finally, we improved our facilities with new toilets and showers to make our clubhouse a better experience for our members.

As chairman, you must be extremely proud of the club and the community?

When I take a step back and think about the above highlights and much more, I am completely overwhelmed with joy and a little speechless (which is unlike me) as it’s incredible what this club as achieved this season. It very much was a complete club/community effort. From the players, committee members and volunteers who give up their valuable time, for this great and historic club!

Next season will be hard to top, but I know there is much more to come and I’m certainly determined to see this club break even more records!

England may have dampened enthusiasm for the sport nationally with their sorry performance down-under but locally there’s a buzz about the promise of cricket returning. Andy and the lads have only one question for you, reader:
