World Alzheimer’s Day and more – Essex Libraries

half term

World Alzheimer’s Day

World Alzheimer’s Day was this week, if you are living with or caring for someone with dementia then we have books that can helpChosen by dementia healthcare experts, carer groups and people with dementia, the booklist contains information and advice, personal stories and support for relatives and carers.

Another great resource is the Pictures to Share collection which can be used as the starting point for a great reminiscence discussion.

Don’t forget about our Memory Support library card which doesn’t incur any fees, so if you forget to return your items on time, you won’t be charged.  Ask at your local library for more details.

British Food Fortnight

British Food Fortnight is upon us and we’re celebrating the culinary marvels we have in Britain. Attend some foodie events, including cooking demonstrations, chef talks and nutritional advice seminars with Love British Food. Or why not get inspired by flicking through over 150 cooking e-magazines, free of charge with the RBdigital app. With popular titles such as BBC Good Food and Delicious UK, there’s bound to be something to your taste.

Silly Squad coming to an end

The Summer Reading Challenge (Silly Squad) doesn’t have long to go. Your children have until Wednesday 30 September to log the books they’ve read, unlock all their rewards and download their certificate. After that those resources will no longer be available on the Silly Squad website.

Once they’ve completed, head down to your local library to claim their Summer Reading Challenge medal.

Even after Silly Squad has come to an end, children will still be able to log into their profile on the website to rate and review books they’ve been reading throughout the year. They can also use their website profile to take part in other activities like the Winter Mini Challenge, enter competitions, post on the Chat page, play games and more.

Avoiding congestion at the school gates

The new academic term is here and with the need to continue social distancing still apparent, Stop.Swap.GO! have created a suite of online information to support parents and young people as they return to school and college.

While buses are still running, there’ll be an ongoing need to socially distance on them and so they will be running at reduced capacity. Why not avoid long queues at the bus stop and try walking or cycling instead.

Head to the Stop.Swap.GO! website where you will find maps outlined for each school with walking and cycling routes and ‘Drive and Drop’ zones highlighted to reduce congestion at the school or college gates. There’s also lots of information and guidance on extra capacity bus services, cycle training and school or college transport options to help reduce traffic chaos and keep Essex moving.
