A bit about Windsor

Windsor is a historic town in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead in Berkshire, with a population of 31,560 (2021 Census).

Windlesora is first mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. The name originates from old English Winfles-ore or winch by the riverside.

Windsor Castle is one of the official residences of the British monarch. The original castle was built in the 11^th century, after the Norman invasion of England by William the Conqueror. At this time, the castle was used as a defensive base. The castle was enlarged and restructured by different kings and queens during their reigns including Henry VIII, Queen Victoria, King George V and Queen Elizabeth II.

Because of the castle, Windsor is a popular tourist destination and has two railway stations, a theatre and several hotels. The only LEGOLAND Park in the UK is based in Windsor which was built on the site of the former Windsor Safari Park.

The original parish church of Windsor is dedicated to St John the Baptist and is situated adjacent to the High Street. The church is said to have dated from the time that King Henry I moved the Royal Court from Old Windsor to ‘New Windsor’.

Windsor has several independent schools in the town and two single-sex secondary schools; The Windsor Boys’ School and Windsor Girls’ School.

The local football club Windsor FC was founded in 2011 after Windsor & Eton FC folded. The Jacks have won the Berks & Bucks Senior Trophy twice (2013/14 and 2014/15) and finished runners-up in the Combined Counties Premier Division (2011/12). Windsor Cricket Club and Rugby Club play their games at Home Park, adjacent to Windsor Castle. Home Park is also the residence of local hockey and archery clubs and the Datchet Dashers Running Club who were founded in 1981. Royal Windsor Rollergirls were one of the first roller derby leagues to be founded in the UK in 2007. Unfortunately, they disbanded in 2023.

Notable residents of Windsor include Sir Michael Caine, who lived at the Old Mill House in Clewer, H.G. Wells, James Haskell, Billy Connolly and Ranulph Fiennes.
