Heritage Open Days is back – launched Friday 11 September – to help more people learn about Chelmsford’s history. A scavenger hunt has been created in the city centre, for young ones and history-buffs alike to connect with Chelmsford’s colourful past.

The tour will take people on a trip back in time to uncover stories about some of the city’s most famous residents and visitors, recognised through special blue plaques found on the city’s buildings. The Council has produced a downloadable map to help people find the blue plaques, with a quiz to play along the way. The scavenger hunt map can be downloaded from www.chelmsford.gov.uk/scavengerhunt.

Councillor Marie Goldman, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Connected Chelmsford, encourages people to explore what’s on offer for Heritage Open Days in Chelmsford: “Our city is bursting with history and the City Heritage Scavenger Hunt gives an opportunity for people to learn some fun facts about the places we regularly walk past, learning interesting stories about the lives of the people that once lived there.

“Heritage Open Days aims to make local history more accessible to all, and the events on offer here in Chelmsford this September are a fantastic opportunity for people to get involved and interested in our city’s culture.”

The Mayor of Chelmsford will be on hand to help launch the City Heritage Scavenger Hunt at 10am on Friday 11 September from Chelmsford Cathedral. The hunt is set to stay for several months and certificates can be downloaded for children that take part.

As well as the scavenger hunt, Heritage Open Days has a series of events on offer – both virtual and real – across the city, taking place from Friday 11 September to Sunday 20 September. This year, people can explore Chelmsford from the comfort of home, take part in real open-air tours of historic sites and book places at live talks via Zoom. Join the Mayor of Chelmsford for a behind-the-scenes video tour of the Mayor’s parlour; tune in to a talk on pioneering women; or art-lovers might like to join in with a heritage drawing trail and a collaborative portrait project.
