An eagerly anticipated outdoor gym has been unveiled along the seafront in Walmer, much to the delight of local residents and fitness enthusiasts. This new facility features ten pieces of cardio, strength, and cross-training equipment, freely accessible to anyone over the age of 13. The project, spearheaded by Walmer Town Council (WTC), aims to promote healthier lifestyles for people of all ages and abilities.

A Community-Driven Initiative

The outdoor gym, located off The Strand near the Roman Landings Adventure Golf, was officially opened to the public with a large crowd in attendance. Cllr Louise Ludwig of WTC expressed pride in the project, citing the collaborative effort with Sport England and equipment supplier Kompan. The facility boasts a £15,000 grant from the National Lottery and a £13,000 discount from Kompan, in addition to WTC’s own budget.

Louise Ludwig commented, “We are proud to have been the driving force behind the delivery of this fantastic free facility, which will benefit the whole community.” She added that the financial support from various partners enabled them to deliver a high-quality facility at great value.

Project Origins and Development

The concept for the gym first surfaced in May 2023, when WTC revealed plans to install fitness equipment along Walmer’s renowned promenade. However, after discussions with industry experts, the decision was made to locate the gym where there would be higher footfall, enhancing its social aspect.

Originally, a planning application was submitted to Dover District Council (DDC) in December 2025, but it was withdrawn this year. A lawful development certificate was deemed sufficient, eliminating the need for conventional planning permission. DDC agreed to a lease for the seafront land needed for this transformative project.

Public Support and Future Prospects

In April 2024, a public consultation conducted by WTC revealed overwhelming support, with 87% of respondents expressing interest in using the facility. Prior to withdrawing the formal planning application, it too witnessed broad backing, with 53 supportive comments from residents.

Construction commenced in August, progressing swiftly to meet the community’s desire for outdoor fitness options. Residents are now exploring the gym, engaging with its equipment, and enjoying the benefits of outdoor exercise.

With the gym now operational, WTC hopes it will foster a culture of fitness across Walmer and beyond, encouraging residents to pursue active and healthier lifestyles in this vibrant community setting.
