February is almost over, and before you know it, it’ll be March. The month of March is definitely the time for a lie in since it marks National Bed Month! Organised by The Sleep Council, this is the month to think about sleep and why good sleep is important to your health. If you don’t get enough sleep, here are the reasons why good sleep is important!

When you have lack of sleep, you tend to wake up groggy and tired. We’ve all heard the saying: “waking up on the wrong side of the bed” and this is usually true. Most of the time, this results in a grumpy mood for the rest of the day. Having enough sleep can make you feel rested when you wake up, boosting your energy levels. When your energy levels are up, you’ll find yourself happier. So, make sure you try to get a good amount of Z’s!

It can boost your immune system

Another reason why good sleep is important is the fact that it can help boost your immune system. This is because your immune and protein cells are also given the rest they need in order to fight off illnesses like the cold or flu.

It can help you lose weight

Getting a good night’s sleep can have a hand in preventing weight gain. If you’re lacking in sleep, this encourages your body to produce a hormone called ghrelin, which boosts your appetite. Not having enough can also decrease leptin – this is a hormone that lets you know you’re full. It makes sense why people with little to no sleep often go through late-night snacking.

If you don’t get enough sleep every night, it can result in heart problems such as high blood pressure or heart attacks. This is due to the stress hormone, cortisol, making your heart work harder. Just like the rest of your body, your heart needs to rest too in order to work properly.

It can help increase productivity

Whether you’re working or currently going to school, having lack of sleep can affect the work you do. This is because you’ll have less energy, which decreases your concentration. Although you might think that having caffeine fixes your problem and gets you through that afternoon slump, drinking coffee later in the day can cause you to be more energetic at night, and this can result in more sleepless nights. So, make sure you get enough sleep since good sleep helps improve your concentration and increases your cognitive function!
