The day of your big move is coming and you’re making sure everything is set and ready to go. Moving to a new house is always exciting, but if you have a lot of belongings, it’s easy to stress. But don’t worry, here’s a moving house checklist to ensure that the process is as smooth as butter!

1. Confirm your moving date

Before you can start to tick anything off on your checklist, this is the first action to take. Conveyancers and house sellers will usually be the ones to confirm the date for you. If you’re buying a house, your moving out and moving in day will probably have to happen on the same day. However, if you’re renting, you’ll be able to move out and move in across several days.

2. Let your landlord know

The second action to take in this moving house checklist is to give your notice to your landlord. If you’re renting, an exact date should be given and should ideally be the same day your lease ends. This way, you’ll be able to avoid paying both your rent and mortgage if you’re buying a property.

3. Let your utility providers know

As well as your landlord, you should also contact your utility providers and let them know about the big move. This includes your electricity, gas, phone and broadband suppliers. If you plan to move your phone and broadband to your new home, make sure your supplier is given as much notice as possible. This is because the moving service can take a few weeks.

When moving into a new home, it may take a while to establish an Internet connection, so you might be Internet-less and may have to entertain yourself by staring at a wall. If this doesn’t seem like a fun way to spend your time, make sure you download anything you might need, such as appliance instructions or films and TV shows to watch.

Before saying goodbye to your old home, make sure you do a final meter reading. A good way to do this is to take a photo of the meter, which will have a timestamp stating when the photo was taken. You should then give the reading to the appropriate suppliers.

4. Clear your home out before you move

When moving, this is a great opportunity to take a look at your belongings and decide what you want to keep and throw away. If you have the tendency of being a hoarder, cutting down on the things you want to bring will make the move easier. If you have any belongings you don’t want to bring, consider giving them away to charity. It’s also a good idea to hire a cleaner for an end-of-tenancy clean to ensure that the property is spotless!

5. Get quotes on removal costs

If you have a lot of belongings and live in a large property, you may need the help of an accredited moving service like Clockwork Removals. If you’re moving into a small property and have to stay within a certain budget, consider renting a van since it may be cheaper. If you’d rather consult a professional, there are sites like Compare My Move and Shiply that will be able to help you get a quote. 6. Pay your bills

If you have any bills left to pay, make sure you focus on paying them off, such as paying off any council tax owed. You don’t want to deal with bills when you’ve settled in your new home. You should also remember to delete your old address on any online retail shops such as Amazon. The following list are the people you need to contact when you’ve moved.

  • Your bank, insurance and pension companies
  • Your workplace
  • The council
  • TV licensing
  • Your doctor and dentist
  • DVLA
  • National Insurance or the DSS offices
  • Post redirection services

7. Pack all your essentials

Finally, you should make sure that all the essentials you want to bring are packed and correctly labelled. These are essentials such as your clothes, toiletries, cleaning products, electrical appliances. You should also remember to bring all of the important documents you’ve stored away, such as your passport, financial documents, mortgage paperwork, etc.
