Different Types of Awnings

During summer, you may be thinking of ways to add shade around your property or in your garden. A way to increase shading around your property is by installing awnings. An awning is an overhang that acts as a secondary covering and is usually attached to an exterior wall, giving shade or shelter to any individual standing or sitting underneath it.

If you’re thinking about purchasing an awning for shading purposes or just to add some spice to your garden, the following list outlines the options available.

Retractable Awnings

As indicated by the name, a retractable awning extends and retracts. This can either be operated manually using a hand crank or a button and a remote control if it’s a motorised awning.

If you have an awning that works by using a sensor, they can be programmed to extend or retract on certain days, such as retracting on days when the sun is shining or extending during rainy days. Although retractable awnings are more convenient, they are more expensive to install.

Fixed Awnings

A fixed awning is an awning that is mounted on an exterior wall, which means you’ll constantly have shade and shelter from the sun or from the rain. Most of these fixed awnings will have support poles to ensure adequate durability. If you want to give a section of your deck or patio permanent shelter, it’s best to install a fixed awning.

Portable Awnings

A portable awning, as indicated in the name, is an awning that can be moved wherever you want shade. A portable awning is also known as a freestanding awning. However, when compared to a fixed awning, portable awnings won’t provide much shade or shelter. There are three main types of portable awnings you can consider. These are:

  • An umbrella
  • A canopy
  • A freestanding awning

Window Covers

Window covers are a type of shading you install on top of your windows. These are usually installed to block out any sunlight streaming in through your windows; these window covers can also be retractable, fixed or motorised.
