This is especially the case if you’re new to baking. If you’d like to become better or reach a pro level, here are some of the baking dos and don’ts you should remember if you’re a beginner.

Do:

  • Make sure you’re using butter at room temperature. This is essential if you want a smooth batter and a fluffy result. By having butter reach room temperature, it will also make it easier for butter and sugar to mix, which is a necessary step in most recipes. This is because the butter will be soft enough to ensure that both ingredients are mixed properly. When following a recipe, make sure you do this unless stated otherwise.
  • Make sure you’re sifting flour. This should definitely be followed if you want an airy consistency and if you want to remove any clumps. It’s also easy to add in other ingredients such as salt and spices.
  • Make sure you’re using fresh eggs. This is important if you want anything you’re baking to come out fresh. If you don’t use fresh eggs, they won’t contain as much air when whisked compared to their counterpart.
  • Make sure you’re using the correct measuring spoons or any other measuring utensils. By using the correct ones, you end up with a successful baked good. If not, you end up with the latter: baked goods that might look a bit odd; they might even be undercooked. This is because the amount of ingredients you add affects the food you’re trying to make. Therefore, ensure that you’re following the recipe and using the correct measuring utensils.

Don’t:

  • Skip preheating. This is an important tip to remember if you’re a beginner, which is due to the fact that the texture and flavour of the baked goods you’re creating can be affected by time and temperature. If you don’t preheat your oven, you might end up with an undercooked or uneven dessert. Therefore, make sure that you’re always preheating your oven for at least twenty minutes before you start baking.
  • Forget to test your baked goods after it’s done. This is another important tip to remember. After your goods are done baking, make sure to check if it’s done by placing a toothpick or any other cutlery with a point in the middle. If it’s dry, then it is cooked and ready to be eaten. If there’s batter present, it’s probably undercooked.
  • Lose focus. When baking, it can be easy to get distracted and do something else. However, it’s always important to keep an eye on what you’re making. For example, if you’re baking something with caramel, make sure your attention stays on it as it can easily burn.
  • Forget to reset the scale. This is another important tip to remember if you’re a beginner. If you forget to reset the scale, you may end up adding the wrong amount of ingredients, which can greatly affect the end result.
