Top 10 Free/ Affordable Summer Events for Families in Kent!

It’s the best time of the year for the kids- 6 weeks of no school and endless possibilities, but as a parent, we understand that finding days out which don’t break the bank can be a hair-pulling bundle of stress. A trip to a theme park and eating out makes it easy to wave goodbye to hundreds in a flash! That’s why we have created a ‘What’s On’ summer events guide for events to keep the little ones entertained for pocket money prices!

To avoid any tears or tantrums we recommend booking the summer events in advance when possible.

  1. Thanet Summer Blast

Thanet District Council has designed programmes to ensure that children between 4-16 years old stay active and have fun during the summer holidays, fuelled by a nutritious meal provided daily! Located in various places across Thanet, including Newington and Dane Valley, your little ones could learn new sports, acting skills and more! The Summer Blast scheme is aimed at children who receive benefits-related school meals, however, if you feel your child would benefit hugely from attending these sessions, you can contact the organisers for more information.

  1. The Mason Mile

Coming to a park near you, The Family Mile Summer Extravaganza is the ultimate fun day out with giveaways, (entertaining…) workouts, music and a chance to stretch your legs with a mile-long nature trail! This free event aims to reconnect us with our communities in a relaxed and welcoming environment! With 5 separate locations and dates across Kent, you can join in with the excitement wherever you are.

  1. Scripture Union

    26th – 30th July 2021

A week’s worth of fun is landing in The Dip at Minnis Bay, starting on Monday 26th July! The events are split into under and over 11’s, hosting the Minnis Bay Olympics and crazy challenges and what makes this better? It’s completely free! Refreshments will also be provided and all you have to do is fill out the registration form.

  1. Newington’s Chill Club

Calling all 10–18-year-olds, every Monday throughout the summer, Newington Community Centre is the place to be with art projects, cooking lessons, ball or board games and planning trips out all for free. Each week is something new, which means you can go back again and again!

  1. The Fabric of Ashford

    Saturday 31st July & Saturday 14th August

Get your creative juices flowing as this community art project needs your help making beautiful fabric squares that will be joined together to create bunting for the bandstand. The work will be illuminated alongside large poetic signs that will stand proud and create a beautiful art installation. The next workshop dates are Saturday 31st July and Saturday 14th August.

  1. Summer Arts 2021

    26 July – 13 August, 10am – 4pm

Scribble down a song, shout “action”, or rattle those spray cans! The Summer Arts free workshops want to encourage young adults between 14-18 in Thanet to nurture their creative flare and become the musician, actor or artist that they have always aspired to be. The courses begin on 26th July, and all you need to do is enrol your future stars on the classes.

  1. Walmer Paddling Pool

Splash around with your little ones at the Walmer Paddling Pool with the scenic views of both Walmer green and the beautiful beach beyond. The free facilities have a qualified lifeguard, changing rooms, deckchair hire and a refreshment kiosk too. Although the pool itself is for toddlers, the surrounding area allows adults and older children to relax on the grass and supervise the younger ones.

  1. The Turner Gallery

Enrich your days out with art, culture and air-con inside Margate’s Turner Contemporary Gallery. Over the summer there are four fantastic exhibitions to view, all with free entry and a cafe to complete the trip. Make sure you book your free tickets before the visit to ensure smooth entry and lose yourself in the artwork!

  1. Lark in the Park, Thanet

    9th-15th August 2021, 1-4pm each day

This free event is a gift from the local church organisations to their community, creating fun-filled family days out with arts and crafts, bouncy castles and stalls. The hope is that the event will unite friends and neighbours- after what feels like a long period of separation- to have a wonderful time!

  1. Ramsgate Tunnels Museum

As a special offer, the Ramsgate Tunnels is allowing free entry into their museum for a limited time which has a new, Home Front exhibition- a great way to teach the children about the past with an immersive experience. There is also a fabulous Tea Shop to serve refreshments with the beautiful views of the Ramsgate coastline.
