Petition to the British Government

AVAAS Petition to the British Government: Please request a full investigation by the United Nations Committee for the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination into the Mugabe Government’s brutal dispossession of British citizens

Petition to the British Government

Why this is important

The destruction of the rule of law in Zimbabwe and the Mugabe Government’s ruinous policies and campaigns of violence have destroyed the commercial farming sector, which was the backbone of the country’s economy.  In the last few centuries there has never been a country – outside a wartime situation – where so many British citizens have lost their homes, businesses and possessions without legal process or any compensation.

Despite this, the British Government has failed to support its citizens, many of whom are now destitute.  Unlike a number of other European countries, the British Government failed to set up a bilateral investment treaty with Zimbabwe which would have held the government to account.  It has failed to initiate a documentation process of British citizens’ losses; and it has failed to invoke the UN Convention for the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) – which has been demonstrably violated.  This is despite the fact that the black SADC Tribunal judges, all appointed by countries in the Southern African Development Community, stood their ground courageously and ruled that the Zimbabwe Government had acted in a racist manner by brutally forcing white commercial farmers off their land.

Until the rule of law and property rights are restored in Zimbabwe, the economy will continue to fail and the grinding poverty will deepen.

We are asking the British Government to:

  • Allocate money and resources towards documenting British citizens’ losses in Zimbabwe and assist its citizens to gain justice following the loss of their homes and livelihoods.
  • Lodge a complaint with the UN Committee for the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).
  • Formally request that ICERD undertakes a full investigation in regard to the ongoing, violent theft of people’s homes, businesses and possessions in Zimbabwe which began 16 years ago and have been committed on a racial basis either by or with the collusion of the authorities.

Sign now to ensure that British Government, which is a signatory state to ICERD, supports the rights of its dispossessed citizens and requests a UN investigation into the ongoing violations.
