‘Live Margate’ Housing renovation programme goes from strength to strength

A house on Trinity Square in Margate has been converted and refurbished, as part of Thanet District Council’s ‘Live Margate’ programme, providing affordable housing to another two local families.

The property, located at 54 Trinity Square, Margate, is one of over 70 flats and bedsits being renovated by the council as part of ‘Live Margate’.

Live Margate Scheme

The programme turns existing poor quality flats and bedsits into quality family homes with affordable rents in Cliftonville West and Margate Central.

The ‘Live Margate’ scheme also helps to improve housing and living conditions as well as encourage investment and owner occupation.

54 Trinity Square required major refurbishment works, including an improved internal layout, new windows, kitchens and bathrooms, as well as a new roof and full insulation.

It also benefits from improved outside space. The property is now re-let as one two bedroom maisonette and one three bedroom maisonette, which are owned by the council and managed by East Kent Housing.

This is another in a series of council projects to improve living conditions for residents in these wards and enhance the general appearance of the area.

It has also recently renewed its five year Selective Licensing Scheme which ensures landlords are fulfilling their duties to provide acceptable housing conditions and ensure good property management in the same area.

In addition, Margate Task Force ‘Operation Streetweek’ takes place across two days each month, focusing on individual streets.

This work involves the multi-agency group identifying local concerns of residents and providing them with assistance and referrals, for example to housing enforcement teams, dentists, and local residents groups.

Making Thanet a Great Place to Live

Rob Kenyon, Director for Community Services at Thanet District Council, said:

“This is another significant step towards providing good quality, safe and affordable housing for residents in these wards. Combined with the recently announced loans for home-owners looking to renovate and move into former empty properties, the council is taking action to rebalance the housing stock in the area to help making Thanet a great place to live.”

In addition to the ‘Live Margate’ initiative,

Thanet District Council has an ambitious new build programme and works with private house builders to include homes for affordable rent in their developments.
