Lewes District Council’s recycling rate is on the up, and the amount of refuse collected decreasing, since the roll-out of the new waste and recycling scheme.

The dry recycling rate for the month of May has risen from 21.72% to 27.78% while refuse collected has fallen from 1,630 tonnes to 1,386 tonnes – a decrease of nearly 13.5% which means 244 tonnes less refuse for incineration.

The overall recycling rate for May has increased from 27.55% to 40.98% which includes more than 10% garden waste.

In addition, more than 99% of material being put in the new green bins with blue lids is recyclable, which means Lewes district residents are recycling the right things and making sure their recycling is clean, dry and free from contamination.

The most recent figures are announced as the final phase of the roll-out programme begins this month with delivery of new bins to houses in the northern part of the district.

Councillor Paul Franklin, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Waste and Recycling, said: “We’d like to thank all our residents for sorting their recycling so well.

“It shows that our new system of just one wheelie bin for recycling, instead of several boxes, is making recycling simpler for everyone – and getting better results. It’s fantastic news for the environment so keep up the great work!”

The new wheelie bins are for paper, cans, tins, plastics, cardboard and glass but ceramics, pyrex and polystyrene cannot be recycled.

Food waste can be recycled in your food waste caddy and is picked up alongside your weekly refuse collections. For garden waste, you can join our collection scheme which costs £70 a year.

When the roll-out programme comes to an end this summer, it will mean that more than 39,000 bins have been delivered throughout the district.
