Eastbourne will commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day with two special events in January.

Organised and sponsored by Eastbourne Borough Council, the theme of the events at the Tennis Centre, College Road, Eastbourne, on Thursday, 24 January will be “Torn from home”.

Local author Dorit Oliver-Wolff will retell her inspirational life story of bravery and fortitude at the first event from 4.45pm to 6.15pm.

The second main event from 6.30pm will remember those who suffered in the Holocaust under Nazi persecution and in subsequent genocides.

Opened by Eastbourne Mayor Councillor Gill Mattock, the event will include testimony from a survivor of the Rwandan genocide, performances by the International Voice Orchestra and the retelling of the Belsen Concentration Camp liberation.

Leader of Eastbourne Borough Council Councillor David Tutt said: “It is ver important that we never forget what others have suffered under persecution. We hope as many people as possible will join us for these free events to commemorate this day when we not only remember, but also honour, the survivors and all those whose lives were changed beyond recognition.”

Booking for both events is essential, places are limited.

Light refreshments will be served.
