Higher Level Apprenticeships At Dover District Council

As part of a wide range of initiatives to promote skills and training opportunities, Dover District Council has launched its first ever higher level apprenticeship – and is currently advertising an exciting opportunity for a Solicitor Apprentice.

Over a six year period, the successful applicant will be able to work to qualify as a solicitor. The apprentice will undertake a LLB in Legal Practice and the required elements of the Legal Practice Course to enable them to sit the Solicitors’ Qualifying Examination. The starting salary for the Solicitor Apprentice post will be £12,492 with potential for an increase to £21,415 over the course of the 6 year apprenticeship.

The decision to recruit higher level apprentices was taken as part of a review of the Council’s Apprenticeship Policy and was announced in National Apprentice Week. The review took account of new Government reforms to apprenticeships, which now span 15 funding bands from band 2 (GCSE level) to band 15 (degree level).

Dover District Council currently has six apprentices working across a range of Council services. Undertaking an apprenticeship can provide a debt free, direct route into the job market, with far less of the transitional struggle from education to work that students can face.

Cllr Mike Conolly, DDC Cabinet Member for Corporate Resources and Performance, said: “We are delighted to be recruiting for our first higher level apprenticeship.  This is a fantastic opportunity for someone to work and learn with a dynamic legal team.  Apprenticeships provide an excellent opportunity for young people to learn, and for employers to benefit from the range of talents young people bring with them.”

The closing date for applications for the Solicitor Apprentice position is 10 June 2018.
