Focus on communities as Gosport Discovery Centre reopens for summer

Staunton Country Park - Hampshire County Council

Gosport Discovery Centre reopened its doors on Saturday 14 July 2018, with more community services and improved facilities in time for the summer holidays.

Hampshire County Council’s Executive Member for Recreation and Heritage, Councillor Seán Woodward, said: “This project ensures that Gosport Discovery Centre remains a thriving part of the community, with more services under one roof, enabling visitors to maximise their use of the building in a modern and flexible way.”

As planned, the Discovery Centre will open mid way through its £700,000 programme of improvement work, so that customers can enjoy the new look venue through the summer.

Hampshire County Council’s Gosport Discovery Centre will now provide a range of new facilities including bookable meeting rooms for community groups; a ‘Changing Place’ toilet facility (for people whose needs are not met by standard accessible toilets), as well as additional accessible toilets; improved facilities for health clinics; plus improvements to the reception area, café and general library environment.

To celebrate the re-opening, customers are invited to try out state of the art technology including Lego Robotics and a Beano themed Crumble game as well as gaining information about our iPad lending scheme.

There will also be the opportunity  for young readers to sign up to this year’s Summer Reading Challenge and become a Mischief Maker; try out a new menu at the Bookworm Café, including special offers and free tasters, and borrow from the new selection of books.

Councillor Woodward added:

“We are looking forward to welcoming customers through the doors this weekend, particularly as we mark the start of the Summer Reading Challenge for our younger customers.”

The core remodelling has been completed over the last six weeks and the final parts of the improvements will carry on into the summer, as planned. This will include work to complete the Changing Place, new accessible toilets and Mezzanine floor, and should not  impact significantly on library customers. The £700,000 project forms part of the County Council’s ‘Community Hubs’ strategy, and the Library Service’s Strategy to 2020, which both aim to make better use of public buildings, providing modern, vibrant community spaces for residents to enjoy. Several libraries around Hampshire are already hosting additional complementary services, such as Register Offices and Citizens Advice.
