Explore Medway by bike

Cyclists have miles of new routes to explore as Medway Council officially opened a network of sporting and recreational trails during National Bike Week.

The council was awarded £2.5million from the Central Government Local Growth Fund, supplemented with £300,000 from the council’s Local Transport Plan, to improve cycling opportunities in Medway.

Existing cycle routes have been extended and cyclists now have more than 70 miles of on-road, off-road and green cycle routes to explore.

MP Tracey Crouch, Minster for Sport, joined council officers to officially launch the new network of cycling routes at the Medway Big Ride on Saturday, 17 June.

This year’s annual community cycling event was part of the finale event for the Battle of Medway commemorations. The event encouraged people of all ages and abilities to enjoy a bike ride in an enjoyable and safe environment, and to be more active. Hundreds of cyclists took part in organised bike rides, from a 1.3mile family ride to an 82mile route for the more experienced riders.

New for this year was the free Ride Together guided group tours from across Medway. Groups of cyclists enjoyed a leisurely bike ride along the new routes, finishing at the main event at Medway Park to take part in the family fun activities.

Cycling has health benefits

Cllr David Brake, Portfolio Holder overseeing Public Health at Medway Council, said: “Cycling is a popular activity for people of all ages to stay fit and healthy, and Medway is already home to a number of keen cyclists. The new routes have been carefully designed for people of all abilities, including beginners, to encourage more people to get active. There are road routes guiding cyclists around Medway’s countryside and off-road trails allowing riders to explore Medway away from any traffic. With the longer, warmer days there is no better time to get out on a bike and explore the miles of new routes across Medway.”
