Yateley United Football Club

United for the community.

Following on from our previous edition, CommunityAd spoke to Yateley United’s Darren Turner to find out more about the club’s history and how their success last season has helped motivate them for the hope of further glory this season…

Although you only formed in 2013, what would you say have been Yateley United’s most memorable moments so far over the past 10 years?

There has been many memorable moments and successes for the football club over the last ten years, however, it is important to highlight and recognise the foundations and history of how they have manifested.

None of these moments would be possible without our amazing family of volunteers and all of our sponsors and community partners.

Yateley United Football Club was formed thirteen years ago, when a group of volunteers united four separate clubs in the community. Due to the forward thinking ideas, proposals and dreams of these volunteers, a plan was put in place to create and develop a community football club. The club remains a volunteer run club and is incredibly thankful to everyone who has played a part in its inception, continued development and purpose.

Season 22/23 alone provided so many memorable moments for the club; Our first team won promotion to step 6 football, winning all of their league matches and were finalists in both cups. Our U18 squad won their league and cup as they prepared their move into Allied football, and our 24 youth teams excelled with twelve cup finals. Our walking football group were also ’super finalists’. Our U6 academy and our introduction to football programmes were more subscribed than ever, meaning that the more people had access to the beautiful game. A true whole club successful season.

The 23/24 season promises to provide more memorable moments, especially with the expansion of our youth team section; six new teams across the age groups including the introduction of girls football with three additional teams.

Through the years many of our players and thousands of our members have given us countless memorable moments and successes; The Football Club is very aware of the responsibility to ensure it provides the environment and platform to ensure the creation of such personal and special moments. Moments the club is honoured and to being part of.

Yateley United Football Club

We are so proud of all the successes of our players past and present; achievements such as our own Dawn Perry-Lewis being called up to the England Deaf Women’s Football Squad, with whom she will compete in next month’s World Cup in Malaysia, is one of so many we cherish.

Physically there have been some key landmark moments.

The acquisition of Sean Devereux Park, our home, meant that the club’s dream in being able to serve the community with access to sport and other activities is reality. Thanks to our incredible volunteer groundsmen, the pitches are maintained to the highest standard and are much revered across the county. The club ability to offer best in class facilities and environment for many in ten community to enjoy sport has aways been a key focus.

A huge moment in our history came last year, on 14th October, as Ossie Ardiles opened our Community Centre. The centre is at the heart of our club and not only creates a home for our members, provides the entire community a new space for events, activities, functions and can be hired for multiple uses. Since its opening it has been used for a vast range of activities including art workshops, business meetings and parties. For all our latest events, please keep close to our Centre specific webpage and our social media accounts @YateleyUnitedCommunityCentre.

Last season you won promotion to the Combined Counties Football League, can you explain just how amazing that season was and what you have done this summer to prepare yourself for the new league this upcoming season?

An incredible season for the entire club, with many successes.

The promotion was a culmination of hard work and belief; the team led by Kevin Fitzmaurice and Gary Wilcox, played at an outstanding level, completing an unprecedented 100% win rate in the league and competed in all 3 cup finals involved.

These achievements are incredible and are well deserved. The whole club is extremely proud of the success and we are hugely excited about our promotion and the season ahead.

In June, First team manager, Kevin, made the difficult decision to step down. The club was delighted, however, that he would remain a key figure in the club as he took up his new role as Head of Player Development.

This did mean that off-season would start by appointing Sam Wilson, his successor as first team manager.

Preparation has been non-stop and with huge thanks to the support of all our volunteers, the club is well on track and will be ready for our first Combined counties home game on the 5th August.

As a fan-friendly club it was crucial that the club is in a position to welcome all supporters to enjoy all we have to offer at Sean Devereux Park, creating a fantastic match-day experience for all.

The ground development have continued with the installation of our first ticket office, new fencing and hardstanding areas and stand. Floodlights are being installed. The volunteer groundsmen have been working extremely hard throughout the summer on maintaining our top quality playing surfaces.

League requirements state the club is obliged to charge an admission fee for all supporters attending our games. This is another first for the club.

With this at the forefront, for all ticket types, the club conducted a full benchmarking exercise, comparing our pricing structure with other clubs to ensure we offer exceptional value for money and enable even more supporters to be able to attend all home matches. We also launched a unique lifetime season ticket initiative that will run up until 31st December 2023. All tickets are available to buy online.
