Yateley Camera Club – 50 years young

Fifty years ago, Yateley Camera Club was formed by an excellent local photographer, Francis Spooner. We still have a member from those days and this season we are celebrating our anniversary.

The club has thrived and grown over the years and now has more than sixty members. We meet weekly at The Tythings, during our season which runs from September to May and over the summer we then organise a series of visits to places of interest to photographers.

We are known as a friendly club and our members have a wide variety of photographic interests including portraits, people, street, nature, landscapes, architecture etc. Some use specialist cameras and lenses and some simply use their phones. Some members are expert in the use of software programs to improve the presentation of their images, with some being very creative.

We organise a full calendar of varied evenings over the season. This includes instructional sessions on things such as composition, really understanding your camera, portraiture and how to get the best out of popular photographic software etc. Often these evenings include a practical element. We also invite expert photographers to give us talks on differing topics and we also have competitions amongst club members, and with other clubs. We have an annual exhibition when members work is on show to the public and we support village activities such as The May Fair.

The competitions include both prints and digitally projected images and are judged by an independent judge who has to consider both the images aesthetic qualities and its technical aspects. Many members have found they have improved their photography by entering competitions.

The club welcomes new members of all ages who have an interest in photography. Our website is www.yateleycameraclub.co.uk and if you are interested in coming along for a few introductory, free, meetings please get in touch with our membership secretary at [email protected].
