Tenterden and District Motorcycle Club 75th anniversary

In 1946, Karl Pugh led the formation of the Tenterden and District Motorcycle Club set up to cater for the social and recreational needs of motorcycle minded people mainly returning from the war and the armed services.

Off road riding was encouraged, many utilising converted road machines used for commuting to work; members at the time were in the 18-50 age group.

Today in 2021, the club has some 60 members catering for like-minded people wishing to participate in low speed off road trials events. They offer riding to an age range of 8 – 70+ and have a growing young rider involvement with electric machines, which have taken a giant step forward in development and suitability for trials events; they also have the added bonus of being almost silent in operation. Club off road riding enhances the social and mechanical skills along with that of appreciation of surfaces and balance of two wheels.

The club encourages parental participation alongside the young riders and in some cases this is mandatory.

Roy Francis, President, told CommunityAd, “On a personal note, having been a member for over 40 years and known of or known personally many members from the formation days, it is a great honour as the current President to see the club reach its 75th anniversary.

“Paramount for the club to being able to operate all this time has been the excellent relationship with the farmers, whose land we have use of, some from our formation.”

The club has worked its way around the COVID-19 restrictions, operating within the Government rules, just as it has in past situations; they are one of the few clubs in Kent with the fortitude to do so.

The permanent display that the club has in Tenterden Museum will be enhanced on August 7th and 8th to celebrate their anniversary. The museum will be running an exhibition that charts the history of the Club and its founder, Karl Pugh, and which will also celebrate some of the highlights from the last seventy-five years, with a display of a number of machines of types used by members over the years, including trials, speedway, grass track, and road racing.

Members will be happy to show visitors around the machines, whilst past members are encouraged to attend and share memories of the past. A publication of the club’s history will be available to purchase.

CommunityAd congratulates the wonderful Tenterden and District Motorcycle Club on reaching their 75th anniversary! You can follow the Club via their website, and find info on the exhibition on the Tenterden Museum website.
