Strawberry Fields Forever in Faversham

Last year CommunityAd reported on the latest anti-bullying film from Kent Youth Theatre, Strawberry Fields Forever. The emotional driving force behind the film was the tragic true story of Steven Shepherd who at just 11 years of age became the UK’s first recorded victim of bullycide. Although only 18 minutes in length the film retraces what actually happened to him during his short life.

Despite all of the hurdles that the film faced during its shoot in last year’s lockdown, it has received some wonderful reviews for all corners of the community. Richard Andrews delights in telling us:

“Whilst the lockdown prevented a proper and scheduled premiere at the Curzon Cinema, the film was distributed to all its cast and crew and to all the most generous supporters who made the film possible.

“Reviews included ‘Fantastic film, so moving with a very clear message, congratulations to all involved’, and ‘Wow that was powerful. I cried basically from beginning to end, it was amazing!’

“It is deeply rewarding to have such comments about the film which was wonderful, fun to make and yet tough at the same time. The target to reach all UK secondary schools is now in our sights. Although destined for all schools the film has been entered into several film festivals for later in the year. Fingers crossed for recognition of its message: Bullying is a lethal weapon.”

The young actor who had huge responsibility in portraying the vision of Richard and honouring the memory of Steven Shepherd, was thirteen-year-old Queen Elizabeth’s student Tom Hatton. CommunityAd had the delight of talking to the talented Tom, who was happy to be back in school after such a long lockdown induced absence and see his friends. We asked if he had been mobbed by autograph requests since returning to school as a movie star but Tom modestly replied “A few people like to comment about it but not really”.

So, Tom what was it like being in a movie and being on set with all the talented people?

It was great fun, I loved every second of it.

Have you always wanted to be an actor?

I’ve always had it in mind, I’ve always enjoyed drama and acting.

Who is your favourite movie star and what are some films that you find inspiring?

I love watching Jim Carrey films as he is the funniest person I’ve ever seen.

The film has a sad message about bullying, why do you think it’s important that young people like yourself watch this film?

To put a stop to bullying as no one deserves to be treated really badly.

Has your involvement in this film inspired you to be involved in other films?

100%, I’d love to do more films.
