Sandown Castle Community Garden Group

The last few months have been difficult for our volunteers at Sandown Castle Community Garden due to illness and operations but the good news is we are all back on track and the spring blooms have been showing us their colours!

The season started with a show of crocus in the grass followed by a lovely display of daffodils, hyacinths and tulips across the tiered garden plus the many Tete a Tete miniature daffodils we’ve planted around the community areas and along the sides of the sea walls and other areas in the North End of Deal. Each year we try to find a new area to plant 2,000 plus bulbs to brighten up where we live and bring a smile to the faces of residents and visitors.

Soon Sandown Castle Community Garden will be showing its strong colours in May as we transition from the yellows to the bold pinks of the sea thrift and valerian. It’s at this time we will be stepping up our volunteering hours in preparation for the South and South East in Bloom which we always participate in each summer. There is much to do including sweeping and pavement weeding in preparation for our judges visit!

We haven’t been idle over the winter as it’s been mild so we’ve continued working on Deal Pier Beds, the High Street garden, Ethelbert Garden and Age UK’s back garden and wall, all areas we also look after and plant up. Along with this we’ve had several discussions with Deal Rotary Pirates about our joint annual community picnic event which this year will take place on Sunday August 18th from 12:00pm until 4:00pm at Sandown Garden. It’s always a favourite time when we can celebrate our green community space, enjoy the summer show of plants, listen to some music from local people, enjoy some food and meet up with residents, friends and our garden supporters.

Our book swap cabinet continues to do well at Sandown with people bringing or taking a book and we still have many visitors all year round who come along and enjoy a cup of coffee and snack from ‘Vivian’ the Hog and Bean’s refreshment van who are there on fine days throughout the year.

We have a variety of volunteers, some who help out on our group sessions, some who pop along when they have some free time, some who help out a lot and others who join in once or twice a year. It all helps so never feel you can’t volunteer even if you don’t have much time. We are always pleased to welcome new volunteers.
