Rochester and West Kent Art Society

Rochester and West Kent Art Society (R&WKAS) is a thriving community of artists centred around the historic city of Rochester.

Founded in the 1920s, the society has now been promoting the arts in the Medway area for almost a century, providing a platform for local artists to showcase their work, learn new skills, and connect with fellow creatives.

The society’s membership is made up of amateur and professional artists from a wide range of backgrounds and artistic styles, working in many different mediums. Members regularly meet to share ideas, attend workshops and demonstrations, and exhibit their work in public exhibitions.

One of the society’s primary goals is to promote the arts to a wider audience and to encourage participation in the arts within the local community. The society’s exhibitions, which are held throughout the year at various locations in the region, offer visitors the opportunity to view and purchase a wide range of original artworks, from traditional landscapes to contemporary abstract pieces.

Rochester and West Kent Art Society also runs workshops, talks, and demonstrations by local and visiting artists. These events provide members with opportunities to learn new techniques, experiment with different materials, and gain inspiration from other artists. We meet on the 3rd Thursday of the month from September to June, between 7pm – 9:30pm, at The Vines Church in the heart of Rochester. During the summer months the society also runs weekly outdoor sketching and painting sessions in a wide range of interesting and varied locations.

Through these activities, the society aims to promote the value of art as a means of enriching people’s lives and bringing them together. One of the key joys of being part of R&WKAS is its sense of community. The society has a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, and members are encouraged to support and encourage one another in their artistic endeavours.

Overall, Rochester and West Kent Art Society is a fantastic resource for artists and art lovers in the Medway and North Kent area. Whether you are a seasoned professional or a beginner just starting out, there is something for everyone at R&WKAS. With its wide range of events and activities, supportive community, and commitment to promoting and celebrating local art, the society is a true asset to the cultural life of Medway and beyond.
