News from St Clement’s Church, Sandwich

As I write, St Clement’s is still looking stunning outside as spring bulbs continue to emerge, and beautiful inside with Easter flower arrangements. With weddings across the summer months, do keep dropping in to see how it changes.

St Clement’s is full of history. Stripping the altars for Good Friday allowed us to see our beautiful medieval ‘mensa’, the altar stone of the High Altar at St Clement’s. At the time of the Reformation our two medieval mensas were set into the floor. Centuries later they were spotted by the great Victorian architect Augustus Pugin, who knelt down and kissed them. They were then taken up and restored to their proper use. It is likely that at least one of our two canonised Saintly visitors, Edward the Confessor and Thomas Becket, witnessed or celebrated Mass at this stone.

With new members of the Parochial Church Council, who act as trustees of the Church, we’re beginning to look at new ways to make St Clement’s more welcoming to tourists and the local community, new engagement with children and young people, and more to bring our history alive, and share our living faith today.

We’re also looking forward to a very musical summer at St Clement’s, with highlights for your diary being:

  • ‘Gala Re-Opening Organ Recital’, Saturday 11th May, 7:30pm – Given by Prof. Ian Tracey (Organist at Liverpool Cathedral), followed by refreshments
  • ‘The Organist Entertains’, Sunday 16th June, 4:00pm – Given by Robert Tapsfield, with tea and cake
  • ‘Deal Festival Concert: “Times and Seasons: Bach and the Organ”‘, Saturday 13th July, 11:00am – Given by Paul Stubbings
  • ‘Nautical Notes’, Tuesday 17th September, 2:30pm – A selection of sea shanties, music, and poetry honouring St Clement, patron saint of mariners. This event forms part of Sandwich Arts Week

Our Choir will also sing Evensong at St George’s Chapel, Windsor, and Rochester Cathedral.

Further details on the above may be found in due course on our website,, or our social media pages in due course. You can find us on X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram.

Alleluia! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed – alleluia!
