Meeting Dover Musicians: As Is Now

One of the joys of the world opening back up is the return of musicians, because what really beats the energy and atmosphere that a live band brings to a venue?

For our latest Dover edition we caught up with Chris Barwell from local band As Is Now, a 3-piece cover band that spans an impressive 18-years, as we ask about the joys of playing in a band versus playing solo, their three Desert Island Discs and more.

Can you tell us about your members and how you came together?

“Originally, with different members, the band were first known as Metal Floss but after our drummer left, we decided that we would change our name to As Is Now. Our new drummer Pete Humphrey and myself came up with the name after a Paul Weller album, as we were both and still are big fans.

“After 4 years running as the new name, I then formed a Jam tribute band Total Jam. Our first bass guitarist Sean Hardy did a few gigs but couldn’t commit due to work so in came Darren Hall. Darren then joined As is Now and he’s been playing with us for 12 years.”

What first got members of the band into music?

“We all have very different backgrounds of music really. Such a varied musical choice between the 3 of us. Darren originally was into heaven rock. That got him playing bass guitar. Myself and drummer Pete have the same tastes in music. Big Country, Beatles, Kinks, The Who, Small Faces and The Jam influenced us to pick up an instrument and learn.”

What are some of the joys of being in a band compared to solo performances?

“Being a solo acoustic performer myself it’s very different to the band, the band is livelier. We’re not just band members we are really like a family so we have a lot of laughs together and click well as a musical unit.”

If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?

“That’s tricky as our musical tastes are so varied but I would say on the spot Paul Weller. Or The Beatles – if all the members were still with us.”

Where are some of your favourite venues to play?

“We play at some great venues and for some great landlords/landladies. I think we can all agree between us that The Bradstow Mill in Broadstairs is a favourite. We are always well looked after by Glenn, the Landlord. We have lots of gigs coming up all around Kent.”

What are some of your favourite songs to perform?

“Probably the hardest question really. I think from a watching, listening, dancing crowd probably Town Called Malice, Band on the Run or Mr Brightside. From a band’s point of view, I’d say Local Boy in the Photograph by the Stereophonics.”

What is the best advice you’ve been given and would pass on to young musicians?

“Never give up on what you want to do and believe in it. Practice is everything. You never stop learning. Even myself and I’ve been playing guitar for 30 years.”

What are your three Desert Island Discs?

“Abbey Road – The Beatles, Morning Glory – Oasis, Setting Sons – The Jam.

“And I say thank you for the music for giving it to US.”
