Mayor of New Romney’s Charity Events: a recap

On a hot, sunny Sunday afternoon in September, the gentle clink of cups and saucers, and the happy chatter of people could be heard emanating from The Assembly Rooms with the Mayor of New Romney.

The 34 guests of The Right Worshipful the Mayor of New Romney, Cllr John Rivers and Mayoress Mrs Anita Rivers, who were Kent dignitaries or from local organisations, were glad of the slightly cooler Rooms, which were decorated with floral bunting and garden flowers, while they sipped cool sparkling wine and refreshing tea, from vintage china.

A sumptuous spread of sandwiches and home baked pastries and cakes was consumed, whilst new acquaintances were made.

And why? It was all to raise funds, in a thoroughly enjoyable manner, for the Mayor’s Charities Fund. This year he is supporting Touched By Cancer, a local group giving support, hope and comfort to those in the community affected by all forms of cancer; Fun4All Shepway Disability Club a charity making it possible for children and their families to reduce their social isolation whilst experiencing joy, friendship, and a sense of belonging; and New Romney Counselling Services who are listening to and working with children, young people, adults and couples in our community to work to find solutions to a problem. The pleasant afternoon raised over £395.00.

The Mayor, and previous Mayor, Cllr Paul Thomas, also took the opportunity to present a Pride of New Romney award certificate to ‘Touched By Cancer’ charity, for service to the Town by a community group or organisation.

Then on 29th September, The Mayor was proud to host a ‘Behind the Scenes’ tour of Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway, in conjunction with the railway management, showcasing this little railway in the heart of New Romney and Romney Marsh.

The Mayor’s guests were fascinated to hear the history and see some of the work that goes on in the workshops and sheds, before being treated to a delicious buffet lunch in the Heywood Buffet, all, again, in aid of the Mayor’s Charities Fund. It was such a popular event that there are plans to repeat it in the Spring!
