Light Up New Romney is back for 2023!

With the nights drawing in and temperatures falling, you may be starting to count the number of shopping days until Christmas. However, if you’re like the volunteers behind Light Up New Romney, then festive plans will have been front and central since early July!

Yes, that’s right – July! It takes around six months to plan and organise the town’s much-loved community lantern parade, late-night shopping and Christmas market. This year’s winter spectacular will be taking place on Friday 8th December with the highlight of the evening being the breath-taking parade with incredible feature lanterns representing different groups throughout the community.

CommunityAd Exclusive - Light Up New Romney is back for 2023!What can residents and visitors to New Romney expect on the night? Along with late-night shopping in the town’s wide range of independent shops, you can browse for festive gifts at the Christmas market and enjoy a spot of pampering at the pop-up beauty hub. Let the face painter adorn you with festive glitter, decorate a memory star for the town’s Christmas tree and you can even post your letter to Santa at Mrs Christmas’ grotto!

Following the parade, a celebration of carols and festive songs will take place in St Nicholas Church, together with a performance from the St Nicholas CE Primary Academy Choir.

A big part of the fun of Light Up New Romney is the chance to get involved with lantern making. The LUNR team will be running a series of free workshops throughout November and December for the community to have their opportunity to get creative.

Free public workshops for individuals to make their own lantern will be held at the Old School, New Romney on Saturday 25th November and Sunday 3rd December.

A separate workshop for representatives from community groups in the town will be held on Saturday 18th November at New Romney Bowls Club. The LUNR team will be on hand to provide tips and ideas for how to create a feature lantern. Alongside this, the LUNR volunteers are once again working with St Nicholas CE Primary Academy on a secret feature lantern mission with the children of Year 4. Our lips are sealed until the big reveal on 8th December!

More details on the free lantern-making workshops, as well as regular reveals for what’s planned for the evening itself can be found on the LUNR Facebook page: @lightupnewromney.
